The approach to combat and everyday life should be the same. Miyamoto Musashi

Many people see martial arts as a hobby that they do two or three days a week or simply another sport. But martial arts were never meant to be either of those. Martial arts is training for battle, whether it is training for war or for personal self-defense.

In addition, your martial arts skills are not something that you keep separate from the rest of your life. It is not something that you compartmentalize and keep in your pocket until you need your skills. Your martial arts training is simply a part of who you are. Therefore, it should be just as useful to you in your everyday life as it is at any other time.

The fact is you will use the character training, persistence, honor, and integrity, which are forged in your martial arts training, much more than you will your physical martial arts skills. The sad thing is that the majority of martial arts dojos no longer spend time developing the student’s character.

Musashi states that our approach to combat and to everyday life should be the same. So we should be able to use our martial arts training in everyday life. But you won’t be using your physical martial arts skills in everyday life. If you are not developing your character, honor, and integrity in your training, then you won’t be using your martial arts training in your daily life.

When Musashi wrote that your approach to combat and to life should be the same, he is also referring to your mindset. Refuse to look at your daily life as if it doesn’t matter. Take it more seriously. Focus on whatever you are doing and do it the best that you can. Every action is important.

Approach each day of your life like it matters, because when you get right down to it, the present moment is all that you truly have. Live your life with gusto, as if you life is on the line, because it actually is. Your life is made of time. Refuse to waste time; take advantage of every hour of your life. Warrior up!
