Put more faith in nobility of character than in an oath! Solon

Many people give their word and make promises, but very few follow through and keep those promises. Not many people take honor and integrity seriously in today’s world. They will promise one thing and do another, without giving any regard to keeping their word.

Instead of putting your faith in someone’s word or promise, look towards their character. Is that person a man or woman of honor and integrity? Does he or she value character? It is much safer to bank on someone’s character than someone’s promise.

A man of character will keep his word. In fact, his word carries more weight than most people’s signed contract. It doesn’t matter if someone signs a contract, makes a promise, and swears on their mother’s life; if they do not live with honor, character, and integrity, then their oath is virtually meaningless.

They will promise anything to get what they want when their back is against the wall. But once their problem is solved, they quickly forget their promise. Most people only follow through on their promises if their is still something in it for them.

The man of honor doesn’t live this way. His word is his bond and means more than other people’s signed contract. He says what he means, and means what he says. If he gives you his word, you can consider it done. Always put more faith in nobility of character than in a promise!
