Choose to See the Truth

Since inner peace comes from within your mind, it depends on the thoughts you choose to dwell on and how you choose to see the events of the world. Inner peace is something that no one can take away from you. You can choose to allow your inner peace to be unsettled, but no one can take it from you without your permission.

Let me make an important point here. When I say that inner peace depends on how you choose to see the events of the world, I am not talking about refusing to acknowledge things for what they are. That is simply deceiving yourself. I am talking about seeing things as they truly are, but choosing not to be affected by those things in spite of what they are.

For example, Abraham Lincoln asked an audience how many legs a dog has if you count the tail as a leg. Well, as you would expect, most people in the audience answered, “five.” When they did, President Lincoln told them that they were wrong, stating “The correct answer is four. The fact that you called the tail a leg does not make it a leg.”

Choosing not to see the truth is not the path to inner peace; it is the path of self-deception. While turning a blind eye to the truth in certain situations may be a more blissful way to live, it can also be a very precarious way to live. Yes, ignorance is bliss, but it is also perilous. There is no true benefit in deceiving yourself. Ultimately, you must be mature enough to see things as they are, but not allow those things to disrupt your inner peace.
