Live by Your Principles!

If you are willing to abandon your principles for convenience, or social acceptability, they are not your principles; they’re your costume.

If you are able to set your principles aside whenever they are inconvenient to you or when your back is against the wall, then they are not truly your principles. Oh, they may be a loose guide for you to live by most of the time, but they are not truly principles which you have made your own.

If you are willing to abandon your principles for convenience, or social acceptability, they are not your principles. They’re simply a costume that you wear when to make yourself feel good, much like a coat that you take off and put in the closet whenever you don’t want to wear it. This is not what true principles are; that is simply situational ethics.

Situational ethics is where your principles change according to whatever circumstances you are facing. If your principles change whenever it is convenient for you, then what good are they? Are they really your principles at all? Of course not! They are just window dressing to make you feel better about yourself.

Having true principles means living by a code. When you have a code, you either live by it or discard it; there is no in between. You either live by your principles or you don’t have principles, period. This is something that you have to decide for yourself; nobody is going to force you to live a life of honor. You choose. Do you have the honor and integrity to live by your principles or are you simply wearing a costume?
