Making an Example Out of One Enemy Prevents Attacks from Others

Sometimes you have to get rid of a fly with a sledgehammer, and it’s not about that fly; it’s about all the other flies watching.

This analogy may sound ridiculous or extreme when you first read it, but once you think about it, it makes perfect sense. The technique of making an example out of one trouble maker to deter many others has been used for hundreds of years. It was used by the Romans, William Wallace, Vlad Dracula, and countless others.

Letting bad people slide when they hurt others only reinforces to them that they can get away with those kinds of actions with no consequences. We are seeing a lot of examples of this in our cities today. Stores are being looting, people are being assaulted, robbery is rampant, and personal property is destroyed. And most of these people are not facing any consequences.

When one person gets off scot-free, the others are paying close attention. They see that their buddy got away with his actions and it signals to them that they can get away with such actions as well. Allowing them do these things with no consequences gives them positive reinforcement.

On the other hand, if you are dealing with a group of scumbags that want to do you harm, destroy your reputation, rob you, harass you, or assault you, it can save you a lot of irritations if you if come down extremely hard on the first one. Of course, you could deal with the first one with a fly swatter, but using a sledgehammer makes more of a lasting impression.

If you come down on one of them like a ton of bricks, not only does that one never want to try you again, neither does any of his buddies. The word quickly spreads that throughout the gutter, or in their mom’s basements, that they shouldn’t pull that crap with you; it is just not worth the consequences.

Violent thugs only respect one thing, and that is someone who, when he is hit, hits back twice as hard. Let one predator slide, and you will have to deal with others; crush the first one, and the others go into hiding, or back to their mommies’ basements. Warrior up!
