The Art of Inner Peace
Distance is my new answer to disrespect. I no longer argue and I no longer react. I no longer dive into drama. I simply remove my presence.
I use to have a strict code about allowing someone to get away with disrespecting me or being rude and obnoxious. I refused to allow people to get away with such actions. It did not matter to me whether it disrupted my inner peace by allowing it to make me angry; I simply refused to let some guy get away with acting like jerk.
The problem with this attitude is that it almost always disrupted my inner peace and sometimes it disrupted my day. Many times it was merely some guy on the internet who I did not know and didn’t care to know. But I realized that my reaction was exactly what those people were hoping to see.
I finally wised up and stopped responding to the obnoxious jerks who crossed my path. If they are online, I simply distance myself from them by blocking them, never to think about them or their rudeness again. If they are someone who is rude and obnoxious in person, I simply distance myself, with a big smile on my face, and have nothing more to do with them.
This may sound like I am allowing them to get away with being rude and obnoxious, but I’m not. I am simply allowing them to deal with the consequences of their actions. Seeing you smiling and happy, instead of hurt or reacting in anger, is like a dagger in their heart.
Most of these people are trying to get a reaction from you when they make rude comments or behave badly. When you simply respond instead of reacting, by distancing yourself, you take away the very thing that they desire — your reaction and attention.
Don’t waste your time arguing with some jerk. Refuse to take part in their drama! Respond instead of reacting by simply removing yourself, and your attention, from their drama. You have more important things to do with your time and mentally energy. This will hit them harder than any argument or witty comeback. And, as a bonus, it will help you maintain your inner peace.
